Singer/Opera Academy

The next deadline for applications for Bachelor and Master's programmes is 1 December

You can choose to take the audition at several levels of the Academy:

Entrance examination for the Bachelor programme

The entrance examination consists of the following elements:

  • principal study audition
  • supporting: ear training / theory test
  • supporting: piano audition

Principal study
A list of repertoire for the entrance examination must be enclosed with the application form. 

Main subject  test - normal duration 20 - 30 minutes:

  • 1 aria.
  • 1 German lied.
  • 1 song by a Danish composer with Danish text.
  • 2 pieces chosen by the applicant
  • A proposed task which is emailed to the admission candidate 7 days before the entrance examination takes place.
  • Sight reading of one of the more easy Danish vocal compositions with accompaniment (with or without text).
The pieces mentioned must be sung entirely by heart – duration 15-20 minutes.

Secondary main subject tests for singers:

If the applicant is admitted to the conservatory he/she must take a test in German and Italian to estimate his/her level of competence. The test consists of reading aloud and the translation of 10 to 20 lines in each of the two languages. Preparation time: one hour.

Assessment: 3 separate marks are awarded according to the 7 point grading scale.

  • Compulsory assignments/assignments chosen by the candidates themselves, studies, scales
  • Forwarded assignments
  • Sight assignment

The test will be passed succesfully, only if the applicant has achieved a minimum mark of 02 in the principal subject examination.

If the applicant passes the principal study audition, he or she then takes further examinations in supporting subjects. These examinations are identical for all Bachelor programmes.

Entrance examination for the Master's programme

The entrance examination consists of a principal study audition. The examination requirements apply equally to applicants who already attend the Academy and wish to take a quota test for the Master's programme.

Qualifying education:

  • BA in Music as instrumentalist or singer from The Royal Danish Academy of Music
  • BA in Music as instrumentalist or singer or equivalent from another Danish music academy
  • BA in Music as instrumentalist or singer or equivalent from a foreign music academy or university of similar level.

The applicant should perform the following:

  • One opera/oratotium aria
  • One recitativo
  • One song/romanza by a Danish composer with Danish lyrics
  • One lied with French, German or English lyrics
  • One work composed after 1970

The rest of the programme is to be chosen freely by the applicant. The programme for the entrance examination must include works in four different languages.

Duration of the entrance examination: 20 minutes (30 minutes including voting).
The entrance examination is censured by two internal censors and a grade is awarded according to the 7 point grading scale.

Entrance examination for the advanced postgraduate diploma programme

A deposit must be paid before taking the examination
When you apply, you must pay a deposit of DKK 1,000 into the following account: bank identification no.: 3001, account no.: 640 3727. Remember to always state your name – otherwise we can't see who has paid in the money!
For international transfers:
SWIFT code/BIC: DABADKKK IBAN no.: DK92 3000 0006 4037 27. Remember to include your name.
The deposit will be repaid in the case of:

  • completion of the entrance examination
  • deregistration at least one month prior to the examination
  • illness, as documented by medical certificate

Form, content and assessment of the examination
The entrance examination consists of a principal study audition, which is taken in two rounds.

In the first round, you will be asked to perform a programme of 20 minutes' duration. An admissions committee will award the performance the grade of "pass/fail".

If you pass the first round, you will continue to the second round, which will be held as quickly as possible after the first round. The two rounds may be held on different days.

In the second round, you will be asked to perform a programme of 30 minutes' duration. The performance will be assessed according to the seven-point scale.

The applicant chooses the repertoire, always subject, however, to the following rules:
  • Together the works performed at the two rounds must cover at least 4 different stylistic periods.
  • At least 4 different languages must be represented in the repertoire performed.
  • At least one work must be of recent date.
  • At least one of the works which at the examination must be performed with piano, must be written for voice and orchestra/chamber ensemble (e.g. a concerto aria by Mozart, an orchestral song by Mahler or Strauss, arias from operas, passions, or oratorios).
  • Performing the same work at both rounds is not allowed.

The soloist programme at the Opera Academy is provided in co-operation with the Royal Theatre.
