Concerts and festivals

The Royal Danish Academy of Music (RDAM) offers more than 200 public concerts every year.

Concert types

The debut concerts are one of the lighthouses in the concert activities. They mark the end of the advanced postgraduate diploma (soloist) programme and include singers, instrumentalists, conductors and composers.

There are about 15-20 debut concerts a year – most concerts take place on Wednesdays in the Academy Concert Hall. Organ debut concerts are held either in the Concert Hall or one of the city churches.

Detailed information on time, place and programme can be found in the Event Calendar.

Many solo and chamber concerts with students, teachers and occasionally guests are held during the season. The concerts generally take place in the Studio Hall.

The Monday series – "Masters on Mondays" with 15-20 concerts a year is the spine of the chamber concert activities. The form and presentation of the concerts are constantly under reconsideration and further development.

Participants and programme details will be presented in the printed six-monthly concert calendar and the concert calendar.

There are many regular customers for the popular Wednesday Concerts at 17:00 with 45 minutes of music at exciting concert halls all over the city of Copenhagen and Frederiksberg.

Wednesday Concerts began in 2002, and they allow the students to get out of the physical surroundings of the Academy and present themselves in the city in various other such as Betty Nansen Theatre, Frederiksberg Town Hall, and the city churches.

The Academy holds three-four large productions of their own every year with RDAM’s Symphony Orchestra and one-two concert in cooperation with Copenhagen Philharmonic Orchestra.

The large symphony concerts are held in the Concert Hall of the Academy except for one orchestra concert in June, marking the end of the academic year. This concert is held in the Concert Hall of Tivoli, and a cooperation project with the Opera Academy is held in January at The Royal Theatre.

The Orchestra Concerts are conducted by a series of top conductors, mostly with relation to the music world of the region in their capacity as chief conductors or music managers.

Several orchestra concerts are incorporated in the festivals arranged by RDAM, and the soloists are normally recruited from the Academy’s own soloist students.

It is compulsory for students in orchestra instrumentation to take part in orchestra projects.

Students from the Academy also participate in several international youth orchestras, such as Baltic Youth Orchestra, Orkester Norden, European Union Youth Orchestra and Gustav Mahler Jugend Orchester. The Academy is occasionally hosting guest concerts with these orchestras.

Study Concerts normally take place at 17:00 or 19:30 in the smaller concert halls and are like workshop concerts, where the students get a possibility to try out preparations of repertory in more informal surroundings. The concerts are arranged by the individual teachers but ultimately concerts across professional boundaries and presentation will also be part of the arrangement.

The organ students hold study concerts in the Organ Centre of the Academy and in the city churches.

The Concerts are normally held at short notice and updated information can be found in the concert calendar.

Each year the Academy's ensembles perform several special concerts directed towards the schools around the Academy.

The concerts occur during the daytime, and the programme is put together, especially with the pupils and children. A performance typically consists of, for instance, a presentation of the brass instruments, a musical fairytale, a music quiz and musical highlights from Handel to the music from Star Wars. The concerts last ca. 1 hour.

Schools around the Academy are invited directly.
