Anne Margrethe Dahl holds a diploma from RDAM (1988) and made her debut in 1989 as Donna Anna in Don Giovanni at Aarhus Sommeropera. She also holds a Master’s degree in elite voice pedagogy from 2005.

Although Anne Margrethe no longer performs as a singer, she stresses the importance of maintaining her artistic side – not just for her own sake, but also for the sake of her students.

“It’s a pleasure to be able to draw upon extensive stage and singing experience. I do this now in my teaching, as a stage director and through my writing.”

Teaching

Anne Margrethe has been employed as a voice teacher at RDAM since 2005. During the same period she has also taught at the Royal Theatre’s Opera Academy, and has been a coach and voice teacher for many professional singers from Denmark and abroad, including guest coach for the Royal Danish Opera Chorus in 2008.

In 2015, Anne Margrethe was a visiting professor at the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre, and she has given masterclasses at Trondheim International Olavsfest and at the Nordic-Baltic Choral Festival in Stockholm (2009), Helsinki (2011) and Vilnius (2015).

Artistic practice

In her career as a singer, Anne Margrethe has established herself as one of the leading Danish sopranos, with an extensive repertoire ranging from oratorios and orchestral Lieder to the great opera repertoire and contemporary music. She has had an extensive international career as a concert, oratorio and opera singer, and has performed in Denmark, Norway, Sweden, England, Scotland, Ireland, Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, Poland, France, Spain, Italy, Egypt, Israel, Brazil, Canada, the USA, China and Singapore.

At the Royal Theatre, where she joined the ensemble in 1999, she has appeared as Violetta in La Traviata, Donna Anna in Manon Lescaut, Rosalinde in Die Fledermaus and Madama Butterfly, amongst others. Anne Margrethe retired as a soloist from the theatre in 2016, concluding her career with the roles of Elsa in Lohengrin and The Duchess in Powder Her Face.

Since 2008 Anne Margrethe has been director of the Opera Academy of the Royal Theatre, and has during the same period been the organiser of the preliminary rounds of the Belvedere Singing Competition at the Royal Danish Opera in Copenhagen.
