Formerly head of the Sound Line at Den Danske Scenekunstskolen, French sound artist Yann Coppier will present some of his research linked to 3D sound, and the various strategies he has developed through the years to adapt and create new material on various multichannel systems.

Should we consider each loudspeaker as an individual, independent from the others, or as a fixed part of one and only soundscape? Should sound objects move inside the sound field, or should the field represent entire rooms in which, coincidentally, something moves? Should we use 3D environments to recreate the real, or should we use them to bring the unreal and the virtual to our own world? Should the sound move while the audience sits, or should the audience move while the sound stands still? Also, should we really all hear the same music, or wouldn't it be fine if we all heard something different during a complex multichannel performance?

Yann will discuss creative possibilities and impossibilities around 3D sound and bring examples of compositions for each of the aforementioned situations and more. Some derived from his set of experiments on humans by 120 loudspeakers sitting as an audience, which he presented in Kulturværftet, Helsingør, in 2019, some developed for his ambitious artistic research publication around Absurd Sounds, on Journal of Artistic Research (JAR), in 2021 (https://doi.org/10.22501/jar.820939) and some new.
