Historic roof garden to be revitalised

In 2026, the Royal Danish Academy of Music began a much-needed renovation of the roof garden at Rosenørns Allé 22. The renovation will improve both the garden’s planting and functionality while also allowing for a thorough inspection of the underlying roof membranes.

The roof garden was originally created by the renowned Danish garden architect G.N. Brandt, but it has undergone several changes and renovations over the years. Today, invasive plant species have spread throughout the garden, creating a need for more extensive work.

The project is being carried out in close collaboration with the Danish Agency for Culture and Palaces. The aim is to preserve the roof garden as a distinctive green space while restoring as much of its original appearance as possible.

A garden in two sections

The roof garden consists of the Sensory Garden and the Canteen Garden. The Sensory Garden, which faces Worsaaesvej, is the section being renovated.

The work will take just over a year. The relatively long schedule is partly due to the need to replant the various plants at the times of year when they have the best conditions for taking root and thriving.

At times during the renovation, the garden will resemble a construction site more than a green retreat. This is a temporary but necessary part of the process. Once the work has been completed, the Sensory Garden will once again be a beautiful and functional roof garden for the Academy’s students, staff and visitors to enjoy.

The garden is expected to reopen during 2027.
