From Specialisation to General Practice – HIPP in modern performance practice

Artistic research (KUV)
by Toke MøldrupChristian Westergaard

The project explores how insights gained from Historically Informed Performance Practice can inspire and enrich contemporary performance practice. In two sub-projects, we are developing material that we will test through a series of workshops across various instrument groups. The aim is to develop a methodology which, through a deeper artistic understanding, can lead to an enriched modern performance of the works.

Westergaard’s main focus is on the physical practice in the rehearsal process on historical piano instruments: Can this be transferred to a satisfactory but also deeper practice on modern grand pianos? What methods can be developed, and what are the artistic potentials?

Møldrup will explore how insight into the pervasive and thorough understanding of the fundamental structure of music in the form of the basso continuo, which has been prevalent among Baroque performers, can enrich a modern interpretation of Baroque music in general, and Bach’s cello suites in particular.

The project is funded through a grant from the Ministry of Culture’s pool for artistic research.
