Music Theory Pedagogy and Artistic Development Work

With a Master’s degree in Music Theory, you will be thoroughly prepared for a professional career as a theory teacher at all levels, for example at preparatory music schools (MGK centres), church music schools, and music academies. The programme is primarily pedagogical in its focus, but it also contains elements that support future music-theoretical development work.

The group of students in Music Theory will be relatively small, but you will become part of an environment with students from related programmes such as Aural Training, General Music Education, and Composition.

Programme Content

The primary tool in the study of music theory is analysis, through which we examine, for example, form, harmony, melody, style, and aesthetics. Great emphasis is also placed on the student’s command of counterpoint and compositional techniques within a variety of genres and styles from the Renaissance to the present day.

Becoming a good teacher in the field also requires familiarity with relevant literature and immersion in didactics and traditions of music pedagogy, which is why these elements are also included in the programme.
During the course of study, knowledge is furthermore developed about the evolution of artistic research and reflection in relation to music theory and music theory pedagogy.
