Rued Langgaards sange

Artistic research (KUV)
by Berit Johansen Tange

The Danish composer Rued Langgaard (1893-1952) wrote around 130 songs to Danish, Norwegian and German texts. And while most of Langgaard's music has now been recorded, his songs, especially those in Danish and Norwegian, are a definite "missing link".

The KUV project is a recording of a wide selection of the songs, in Danish, Norwegian and German, with soprano Signe Asmussen. Signe Asmussen and I have performed a large number of Langgaard's songs over a number of years - in several cases as the first since the composer's own concerts. The projected recording will show the enormous stylistic and expressive variety in the works.

There is an enormous need and demand for recordings of these works. Both because the songs are a central and interesting part of Langgaard's oeuvre, and because they will be an important tool in a pedagogical context. It is my wish to stimulate young people's and their teachers' already budding interest in and knowledge of Langgaard, and that within a few years his songs may become part of the mainstream repertoire in the same way as, for example, Heise and Carl Nielsen. Therefore, I will also, in collaboration with Signe Asmussen, present the project with a workshop for RDAM's singing and piano students, in connection with the "Rued Langgaard Masterclass" being held for the 3rd consecutive year in April 2023.
