The entrance examination in the main instrument consists of three parts:

  1. Set repertoire
  2. Assigned task
  3. Prima vista

Each element is assessed according to the 7-point grading scale. For a detailed description of the individual grades, please refer to the applicable regulations.

Set repertoire

When assessing the set repertoire, emphasis is placed on the following main areas:

Musical Understanding

  • Stylistic understanding in relation to the chosen repertoire
  • Understanding of one’s own role in relation to the accompaniment
  • Rhythmic precision and security, and sense of phrasing
  • Harmonic understanding
  • Intonation

Technical Skills

  • • Instrumental mastery, including sound quality, evenness, and intonation
  • • Articulation and dynamic control

Interpretation and Communication

  • Ability to convey musical intentions and expression
  • Personal expression within stylistic boundaries
  • Where relevant to the admission requirements: the repertoire choice reflecting the applicant’s artistic personality as well as understanding of their own technical and musical strengths (and limitations?)
     

Specifically for the Assigned Task and Prima Vista Task

The purpose of the assigned task is to give the examiners an opportunity to form an impression of how far an applicant can progress in their own work with studying and performing a short new piece of music or an excerpt from a larger work.

The purpose of the prima vista task is to give the examiners an opportunity to form an impression of the applicant’s ability to read and decode a new musical score, including:

  • Quick reading and realization of musical material
  • Ability to accept instruction and assistance in the very first phase of studying a new piece

The grades reflect the extent to which the applicant demonstrates sufficient musical and technical skills to complete the program, as well as an assessment of the applicant’s potential to achieve a professional level through the program.

All applicants must attend the entrance examination in their principal study, which is taken in two rounds. Round one and two are described under your principal study here.

These two rounds are the only entrance examination for the specialisation Soloist Performer. The second round ends with a five-minute conversation about the applicant's motivation for applying, career considerations, etc.. The conversation does not affect the grade but is used for mutual matching of expectations about the education.

Here you focus on developing your individual musical talent to the highest level, and you immerse yourself in an artistic research project.

All applicants must attend the entrance examination in their principal study, which is taken in two rounds. Round one and two are described under your principal study here.

The third round consists of a conversation about the applicant’s proposal for an artistic research project.

The applicant must submit a description of the desired project within artistic research in the application for admission. The project description should be 4-6 pages plus annexes.

The application must include:

  • A project description, including considerations of methodological and artistic issues
  • The applicant’s CV
  • Proposals for partners in and outside the Academy if any

The third round consists of a conversation about the project. The duration of the conversation is 30 minutes including assessment.

The third round is assessed by two internal examiners with pass/fail.

Here you focus on developing your individual musical talent to the highest level, and you receive tuition in pedagogy at the highest level as well as associated supervised teaching at the bachelor’s and MGK level.

All applicants must attend the entrance examination in their principal study, which is taken in two rounds. Round one and two are described under your principal study here.

The third round consists of submission of written material as well as a proficiency test in teaching.

The applicant must submit written material on 2-3 pages plus annexes in the application for admission. The written material must include:

  • A motivation letter
  • Pedagogical and methodological considerations regarding teaching practice
  • Any considerations regarding educational courses (including considerations of internal and external partners)
  • The applicant’s CV (in annex)

The proficiency test in teaching consist of three parts:

  • We provide a student on the bachelor’s level and a teaching assignment in your principal study. The assignment is known by the provided student. The assignment is emailed to the applicant a week before the proficiency test in teaching takes place.
  • A prima vista assignment in teaching. The assignment is known by the provided student.
  • The test ends with a five-minute conversation about the applicant's motivation for applying, career considerations, and pedagogical background, etc.. The conversation does not affect the grade but is used for mutual matching of expectations about the education.

The duration of the third round is 45 minutes including assessment.

The third round is assessed by two internal examiners with pass/fail.
